[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] On the 27th, U.S. Qualcomm announced that it will embark on the development of next-generation 5G technology for connected vehicles in collaboration with LG Electronics and tire manufacturer Continental.

Qualcomm entered the automotive business in the early 2000s and has supplied 4G LTE platforms to numerous automakers since 2013. With the full-scale advent of the autonomous vehicle era, it is now moving to supply 5G platforms.

The 5G platform serves to connect vehicles with nearby base stations. Utilizing communication enables navigation, gaming, real-time broadcasting, emergency calls, and more. Additionally, 5G’s ultra-high speed and ultra-low latency advantages are expected to play a key role in the widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles through the 5G platform.

Among domestic electronics companies, LG Electronics has maintained a long-standing cooperative relationship with Qualcomm. In 2004, they developed telematics technology together, and in 2017, they signed an agreement to jointly develop next-generation connected car solutions to capture the autonomous vehicle parts market.

In 2019, LG Electronics also entered into a business cooperation agreement for the research and development and ecosystem expansion of the vehicle infotainment platform 'webOS Auto,' which it independently developed.

Park Jong-sun, Executive Director at LG Electronics, said, "LG and Qualcomm, as leaders in mobile innovation, are particularly focusing on the 5G automotive platform sector and are applying accumulated R&D experience from the automotive industry. Based on the long-term cooperation with Qualcomm, we were able to build a complete 5G connected car platform."
