[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in had a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping and agreed to cooperate in revitalizing high-level exchanges, including Xi's visit to Korea.
The Blue House announced that President Moon had a 40-minute phone call with President Xi starting at 9 p.m. on the 26th.
Blue House spokesperson Kang Min-seok said, "The two leaders evaluated that despite the COVID-19 situation, South Korea and China have maintained close cooperation and communication. They agreed to strengthen quarantine cooperation and, while ensuring quarantine measures, to activate human and economic exchanges." He added, "They also agreed to continue close communication and cooperation to revitalize high-level exchanges, including President Xi's visit to Korea."
During the call, the two leaders declared 2021-2022 as the "Year of Korea-China Cultural Exchange" and wished for successful exchange outcomes. They also agreed on the idea of envisioning a development blueprint for the next 30 years through the "Korea-China Future Development Committee," ahead of the 30th anniversary of Korea-China diplomatic relations in 2022.
Meanwhile, prior to the call, President Xi sent a congratulatory letter on President Moon's birthday on the 24th. In the letter, President Xi expressed congratulations and stated, "I value the development of Korea-China relations and hope to work together with President Moon to further advance Korea-China relations." President Moon also expressed gratitude for the congratulatory letter and replied, "I hope to work together with President Xi this year as well to leap forward Korea-China relations and promote peace on the Korean Peninsula."
