[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] Although the third wave of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in South Korea has somewhat eased, new cases linked to religious facilities and other venues continued, resulting in ongoing confirmed cases on the 26th.
According to the quarantine authorities and local governments, from midnight to 6 p.m. on that day, a total of 329 new COVID-19 cases were reported nationwide. This is 102 more cases compared to the same time the previous day.
By region, 230 cases (69.9%) were in the metropolitan area, and 99 cases (30.1%) were in non-metropolitan areas. Specifically, Seoul reported 112 cases, Gyeonggi 106, Busan 27, Gyeongnam 20, Gangwon 16, Incheon 12, Gwangju 10, Gyeongbuk 8, Chungbuk and Jeonbuk 4 each, Daegu 3, Ulsan and Jeonnam 2 each, and Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungnam 1 each. No confirmed cases have yet been reported in Jeju.
The number of new confirmed cases over the past week were 404 → 400 → 346 → 431 → 392 → 437 → 354 daily, averaging about 394.9 cases per day.
However, confirmed cases have occurred not only at the Daejeon IEM International School under the IM Mission but also at related facilities in other regions connected to this location, and sporadic small-scale cluster infections are also occurring, making the situation still concerning.
Major new cluster infection cases include ▲Daejeon IEM International School (cumulative 171 cases) ▲Gwangju TCS Ace International School and Buk-gu Church (31 cases) ▲Yongsan US military base (30 cases) ▲Seoul Jung-gu workplace (13 cases) ▲Guri City childcare facility in Gyeonggi (10 cases), among others.
