Yeongdeungpo-gu Launches 'Seolnal Traditional Market Group Purchase' Initiative

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) is launching a ‘Seol Holiday Traditional Market Group Purchase’ with the local traditional market merchants' association to revitalize traditional markets that have been depressed due to the resurgence of COVID-19 and the extension of social distancing measures.

Last year, the district also conducted a ‘Chuseok Holiday Traditional Market Group Purchase’ to support traditional market merchants struggling due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of five markets, including Yeongdeungpo Traditional Market, participated, selling representative products unique to each market such as sesame oil, dried seafood, Korean traditional sweets (Hangwa), and fruits.

As a result of the group purchase, a total of 740 residents participated, 1,627 products were sold, achieving approximately 50 million KRW in sales.

The district evaluated this as an achievement made possible by the active cooperation of staff and professional organizations despite the short preparation period, and an opportunity to discover the potential for traditional markets, which have relatively insufficient online distribution infrastructure, to establish a new marketing exit strategy.

Building on last year’s success, this year’s Seol holiday will also feature a non-face-to-face group purchase of traditional market products.

Through this group purchase, customers can buy Seol holiday ritual items and high-quality domestic agricultural products at reasonable prices, including ▲ sesame oil, dried seafood, seaweed sets (Yeongdeungpo Traditional Market), ▲ Hangwa, Gangjeong sets (Uri Market), ▲ socks, underwear sets, red ginseng (Yeongsin Arcade), and ▲ dried persimmons, cosmetics (Daerim Central Market).

Group purchase orders will be accepted until February 1. Customers can scan the QR code using their mobile phone camera or the Naver app to access the Naver Smart Store.

Group purchase gift sets will be delivered sequentially starting February 4, with all shipping fees fully covered.

Additionally, a pop-up store where customers can see and purchase products directly on-site will be introduced.

The pop-up store will be held ▲ from January 26 to 27, 3 PM to 7 PM at Yeongdeungpo Market Station, and ▲ from January 28 to 29, 4 PM to 8 PM at Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station.

Furthermore, customers who purchase through the Naver Smart Store will be entered into a draw to win a mobile Onnuri gift certificate worth 10,000 KRW, and those who purchase over 20,000 KRW at the on-site sales event will receive a paper Onnuri gift certificate worth 5,000 KRW on a first-come, first-served basis.

The district is working closely with local traditional market merchants to develop a joint brand called ‘Yeongsijang,’ showcasing the differentiated characteristics and various excellent products of traditional markets, striving to increase traditional market sales and revitalize neighborhood commercial districts.

Also, the district displays products at 18 community service centers within the area, providing convenience for local residents to directly check and purchase products.

Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “Purchasing goods through the ‘Seol Holiday Online Group Purchase’ helps revive the local economy depressed by COVID-19 and allows residents to shop conveniently and safely, achieving two benefits at once. This Seol holiday, we ask for your participation in kind consumption by purchasing necessary items from online traditional markets, sharing goodwill among neighbors, and revitalizing the local economy.”
