[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] Victims and their families who suffered from illegal acts by state agencies during the Lee Chun-jae serial murder case have urged the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for the Resolution of Past Incidents (Truth and Reconciliation Commission) to investigate the facts.
On the 25th, Yoon Seong-yeo (54), who was imprisoned for 20 years after being falsely accused as a suspect in the 8th Lee Chun-jae case and recently acquitted in a retrial, said at a press conference held in front of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Jung-gu, Seoul, "All incorrect truths must be corrected from now on."
Three people, including Yoon, submitted the request for fact-finding on that day. Participants included the father of Kim Hyun-jung, a victim of the Hwaseong elementary school student disappearance case that has remained unsolved for over 30 years, and the older brother of Yoon Mo (deceased in 1997), who was falsely accused as a suspect in the 9th case, made a false confession, and was later cleared by DNA testing.
They requested the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to reveal specific truths throughout the investigation, including the circumstances under which victims falsely accused as suspects in the Lee Chun-jae case made false confessions, and the process of concealing the murder victims' bodies and destroying evidence.
Attorney Park Jun-young said, "Although justice can be said to have been realized through the retrial of the 8th case, in which (Yoon Seong-yeo) was acquitted, 13 out of the total 14 cases have yet to be investigated," adding, "More than 20,000 people were placed under suspicion during the investigations of the 14 cases, and a considerable number of them appear to have been subjected to inhumane investigations." After the press conference, they submitted the request for fact-finding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
