[Asia Economy Reporter Hana Na] The official Twitter account of the U.S. Embassy in South Korea posted a composite photo showing U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders watching kimchi being made, along with the caption "Waiting for the original Korean kimchi."
The photo, released on the 22nd, is a composite of an image from the "Sharing Love Kimchi Making" event held on the 1st of last month by the Saemaeul Women's Association in Gokseon-dong, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi Province, and a picture of Senator Bernie Sanders, who became a topic of conversation for his unique fashion at U.S. President Joe Biden's inauguration on the 20th.
The U.S. Embassy used this composite photo to create an online parody image known as a "meme," tagging it with hashtags such as #berniesandersmemes and #berniesandersmittens to facilitate SNS searches.
Meanwhile, former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Harry Harris, who retired, posted a video on his SNS learning how to make kimchi during the controversy over China's "kimchi process," writing, "I am happy to live in Korea, the homeland of kimchi."
