[Asia Economy Reporter Hana Na] It was recently revealed that the former deputy director of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements was arrested and indicted late last year on charges of murder for neglecting to provide appropriate first aid to an employee who collapsed due to a cerebral hemorrhage, resulting in the employee's death.

According to Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office, former deputy director of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, A (57), is accused of leaving his junior female employee B unconscious in a vehicle for over four hours at his residence in an apartment in Sejong City in August 2019, the office announced on the 22nd.

Mr. A eventually took Ms. B to the hospital emergency room, but she ultimately passed away. The distance between the hospital and Mr. A’s residence was reportedly about a 10-minute drive.

Following Ms. B’s death, Mr. A, who was questioned as a police witness, reportedly attempted to jump from a motel in Cheongju, Chungbuk, sustaining serious injuries.

The prosecution considers Mr. A responsible for murder by omission, meaning he failed to provide the necessary aid that should have been given to the victim. Despite the employee collapsing from a cerebral hemorrhage, Mr. A dragged her outside and left her inside the car, which forms the basis for the murder charge.

A prosecution official stated, "This case was initially sent to the police with a recommendation for indictment without detention," adding, "The prosecutor in charge conducted an investigation for over a year, recently arrested Mr. A, and brought him to trial."
