One of the suspects in the 'Kangwon Land Casino Cash Theft Incident' that occurred in February last year was extradited from Spain to South Korea through Incheon International Airport on the afternoon of the 22nd.
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] The National Police Agency announced that one of the three suspects involved in the 'Kangwon Land Casino Cash Theft Incident' that occurred in February last year was extradited from Spain to South Korea on the 22nd through Interpol international cooperation investigation.
The three foreign-national suspects used a pre-copied key to steal 24 million KRW in cash from inside slot machines at Kangwon Land Casino in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon Province in February last year, and fled to Thailand the next day.
The National Police Agency immediately issued Interpol red notices for the suspects. Starting with Thailand Interpol, the initial country of escape, they tracked the suspects' escape routes in real time through Interpol in four countries (Thailand, Cambodia, Qatar, and Spain).
After confirming from Thailand Interpol that two suspects with Peruvian nationality had departed for Qatar, they promptly requested Qatar Interpol to verify the suspects' entry status. Qatar Interpol informed them that Qatar was not the suspects' final destination and that they were in transit to Spain by passenger plane.
Upon confirming the suspects' imminent arrival in Spain, the National Police Agency (Foreign Affairs Bureau Interpol Division) swiftly requested Spain Interpol to arrest the suspects, and the police attach? dispatched locally also repeatedly requested the Madrid Airport Police to arrest the suspects. The Spanish authorities arrested the suspects entering Madrid Airport based on the Interpol red notices at the request of the Korean agency.
Subsequently, the Spanish authorities proceeded with the criminal extradition process with the Korean Ministry of Justice, and recently, upon deciding to extradite one suspect to Korea, the Korean Ministry of Justice (International Criminal Division) dispatched a transport officer to extradite the suspect to South Korea. The extradition review for the other arrested suspects is also underway, and a domestic extradition decision is expected soon.
A National Police Agency official stated, "We arrested the suspects through real-time international cooperative investigation with Interpol in four countries and Interpol red notices, and despite the suspects being foreigners, we successfully repatriated them through criminal extradition, setting a model case." He added, "We will continue to investigate the remaining accomplices through Interpol cooperation and criminal extradition, and will strongly respond to criminals fleeing overseas through Interpol international cooperation and cooperation with domestic related agencies in the future."
