[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] Kang Young-seok, mayor of Sangju City, announced on the 22nd that he delivered the treasure designation certificate of 'Daeseongjeon, Dongmu, Seomu,' Nationally Designated Cultural Property Treasure No. 2096, to Sangju Hyanggyo (Jeongyo Geum Jung-hyun).
Sangju Hyanggyo is known to have existed since before the 34th year of King Gojong of Goryeo (1274), and Daeseongjeon is the second largest in scale in Korea, following the Daeseongjeon of Seoul Munmyo.
Additionally, Dongmu and Seomu were originally built in 1612 (the 4th year of King Gwanghae) and rebuilt later, but they are evaluated to have largely preserved the original form from the mid-Joseon period. They are the third largest in scale after Seoul Munmyo and Gyeongju Hyanggyo’s east and west gates, and were designated as treasures due to their outstanding historical, academic, and architectural value.
Kang Young-seok, mayor of Sangju City, emphasized, "Sangju Hyanggyo is a Daeseolwi Hyanggyo located in a large town where a mok was installed during the Goryeo and Joseon periods. It has been recognized for its status as a Daeeup Hyanggyo in terms of scale and form and designated as a national treasure. We will do our best to preserve, utilize, and manage it."
