Gwangju Seo-gu Council Formalizes Regulations on Stray Cats' 'Neutering and Release'

Rep. Park Young-sook's Proposed Amendment Passed...Expectations for a Society Where Stray Cats and Humans Coexist

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu district has newly established a "Stray Cat Management Plan" within the "Ordinance on the Protection of Companion Animals and Lost or Abandoned Animals and Prevention of Animal Abuse."

According to Seo-gu Council on the 21st, the partial amendment to the Animal Abuse Prevention Ordinance, proposed by Councilor Park Youngsook, was finally passed at the 2nd plenary session of the 292nd extraordinary meeting held that day.

The amendment includes provisions for managing stray cats by neutering them and releasing them back to the location where they were captured.

Currently, Gwangju City and others are conducting stray cat neutering projects, but Seo-gu did not have a codified ordinance. With this ordinance amendment, it is expected to control the stray cat population and reduce social conflicts.

Councilor Park Youngsook said, "The purpose of this ordinance amendment is to realize a society where people and stray cats coexist, keeping pace with the increasing interest and awareness of residents regarding animal welfare and protection."
