[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] Amid the release of various high refresh rate laptops in the market, 90Hz OLED laptops will make their debut this year.
Samsung Display announced on the 21st that it will begin full-scale mass production of 90Hz refresh rate OLEDs for laptops starting in March.
Most existing OLEDs for laptops have a 60Hz refresh rate, but Samsung Display recently completed the development of 90Hz OLEDs for laptops and will start full-scale supply this year. Accordingly, many global IT companies plan to launch premium OLED laptops with a 90Hz refresh rate this year.
The refresh rate indicates how many times the screen changes per second. At 90Hz, 90 still images rapidly change within one second, making people or cars appear to move realistically. The higher the refresh rate, the more frames change faster, allowing for smooth and natural video. However, if the refresh rate is too high, it results in increased heat generation and power consumption, and requires a high-performance graphics card. Therefore, it is important for consumers to choose products with an appropriate refresh rate that suits their usage environment.
According to Samsung Display, even at the same refresh rate, OLEDs have faster response times compared to LCDs, allowing for natural image quality when enjoying high-capacity movies or games at that refresh rate. Thanks to response times more than 10 times faster than LCDs, 90Hz OLEDs can operate at speeds comparable to 120Hz LCDs.
A Samsung Display official stated, "OLED is the optimal display that can satisfy various consumer needs for laptops, such as remote work, online learning, video streaming, and gaming," adding, "We will collaborate with clients to create new trends in the laptop market."
