[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] A verbal spat has erupted following the 'Yeokjisaji (易地思之)' remark by Joo Ho-young, the floor leader of the People Power Party. When Kim Kyung-hyup, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, mentioned 'industrial sewing machines' and other terms, the People Power Party responded with shock.
On the 20th, Choi Hyung-doo, the floor spokesperson for the People Power Party, stated, "Are you trying to sew the mouth shut of the opposition floor leader just because he advised the President to 'put yourself in others' shoes'?" He added, "We are appalled by the below-standard slander from a three-term ruling party lawmaker who tries to silence the opposition floor leader’s remark that the unfortunate history of a former president must not be repeated by calling it an 'industrial sewing machine'."
Earlier, Representative Kim posted on Facebook, "Joo Ho-young’s parade of below-standard slander continues," and said, "I am sending an industrial sewing machine as a gift so that he can no longer pollute the ears of the people." The post included an image of an industrial sewing machine addressed to Floor Leader Joo.
Although there was no explicit statement about what to do with the industrial sewing machine, it appears to be a euphemistic way of saying that the opponent’s mouth should be sewn shut so they cannot speak.
In the past, in 1998, Kim Hong-shin, a member of the Grand National Party, was fined for saying that President Kim Dae-jung’s mouth should be sewn shut with an industrial sewing machine.
Spokesperson Choi lamented, "The ruling party leader is the one who brought up the pardon but then found himself in a desperate situation, and the President, who alone holds the constitutional authority for pardons as the highest responsible person for national unity, postponed the decision to the people," adding, "Hearing the slanders that were once hurled at the late President Kim Dae-jung 20 years ago now coming from Democratic Party lawmakers is something that would anger both President Kim and heaven."
