[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-eun] On the 20th, Kim Kyung-hyup, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, called the remarks made by Joo Ho-young, the floor leader of the People Power Party, toward President Moon Jae-in?"When they become former presidents, they might become subjects of a pardon"?a "parade of abusive language" and said he would send him an industrial sewing machine as a gift.
On the same day, Kim posted a photo of an industrial sewing machine from an online shopping mall on his Facebook, saying, "The below-standard parade of abusive language by Joo Ho-young, floor leader of the People Power Party, continues." He added, "To prevent further pollution of the people's ears, I am sending an industrial sewing machine as a gift." The recipient on the sewing machine in the photo is specified as "People Power Party Floor Leader Joo Ho-young."
Meanwhile, voices criticizing Floor Leader Joo also emerged at the Democratic Party's Supreme Council meeting held that day.
Kim Tae-nyeon, floor leader of the Democratic Party, stated, "These remarks go beyond political ethics and propriety," and added, "It is very regrettable that the leader of the main opposition party did not hesitate to make a curse-like statement treating the sitting president as a lawbreaker."
He continued, "He said things that should not have been said," emphasizing, "Looking at the outcome, it is ultimately an insult to our sovereign people. He is making very provocative and hateful remarks, so please maintain the dignity of politics."
Supreme Council member Kim Jong-min also criticized, saying, "Floor Leader Joo's dreadful imagination linking the sitting president to a pardon is shocking," and pointed out, "It is a symbolic statement revealing the true intentions of the People Power Party and a declaration of retaliation that they will repay whenever they get the chance. It is a declaration of non-acceptance of impeachment and a direct challenge to candlelight democracy. It is certain that the People Power Party is an anti-Moon Jae-in force."
Supreme Council member Yang Hyang-ja also said, "I feel deeply humiliated by Floor Leader Joo's abusive language," and criticized, "Not long ago, he mentioned impeachment, and now he says the president could become a subject of a pardon. The prerequisite for a pardon is judicial punishment, so is he saying President Moon must have committed a crime he did not commit?"
