[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] The issue of ‘universal disaster relief payments,’ which caused internal conflict within the Democratic Party of Korea, was settled on the 19th. The Democratic Party conveyed to Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung that “while respecting the autonomy of local governments, please consider the quarantine situation,” and Governor Lee accepted this.
According to the Democratic Party, on the afternoon of the previous day (18th), Policy Committee Chairman Hong Ik-pyo conveyed this message to Governor Lee by phone. Chairman Hong stated, “While respecting the autonomy of local governments, the quarantine situation must be fully considered.”
Governor Lee’s side said in a statement that day, “We respect the party’s opinion,” and “We will decide on the timing of the execution, the recipients, and the payment methods of Gyeonggi Province’s second disaster basic income, fully taking into account the quarantine situation.”
