[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] French actor and screenwriter Jean-Pierre Bacri has passed away at the age of 69.


According to AFP on the 18th (local time), Bacri's spokesperson announced that he, who had been battling cancer, passed away that day.


Bacri, considered one of the leading actors in France, the birthplace of cinema, won the Best Screenplay award four times and the Best Supporting Actor award once at the C?sar Awards, one of France's two major film awards alongside the Cannes Film Festival.


Bacri was known to the public as a distinctive actor who skillfully portrayed unique characters with nonchalance.


All the Best Screenplay awards he received were co-written with his former partner, actress and director Agn?s Jaoui. They met on the theater stage in 1987 and separated in 2012, but continued to collaborate on works afterward. Their representative works include the films “Taste of Others” (1999), “Look at Me” (2004), and “Rain” (2008). All were directed by Jaoui.


Bacri was born in Algeria in 1951 and moved to Cannes, France with his family in 1962. At the age of 25, he moved to Paris and debuted his first theater script in 1977. At the same time, he began acting in small roles on TV and theater stages. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, he appeared in over 50 films.
