[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 19th that it will urgently provide 2 billion KRW in Special Disaster and Safety Grants to local governments for cold wave measures targeting vulnerable groups.

The Ministry judged that the cold wave is likely to continue for some time and decided to provide additional special grants. At the end of last year, it also supported 3 billion KRW in special grants for the installation of cold wave mitigation facilities.

This Special Disaster and Safety Grant will be used to provide emergency supplies to facilities related to homeless people and residents of jjokbang villages, such as comprehensive support centers for the homeless, temporary shelters, and jjokbang counseling centers, and to distribute winter cold protection items to vulnerable groups such as elderly living alone.

Jeon Hae-cheol, Minister of the Interior and Safety, said, "As the COVID-19 situation continues, marginalized groups are facing greater difficulties," adding, "We will spare no administrative and financial support to minimize human and property damage caused by the cold wave."
