Why Did Mapo-gu Rank 9th Nationwide (5th in Seoul) in the '2021 Social Safety Index'?

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) ranked 9th nationwide (5th in Seoul) in the comprehensive analysis results of the '2021 Social Security Index' conducted across 155 local governments nationwide.

The '2021 Social Security Index' (Korea Security Index 2021) is an evaluation index that scores and analyzes four major areas affecting safety and anxiety in our society: daily safety, economic activity, health care, and residential environment.

The Data Science Center (DSC) of Sungshin Women's University, polling agency KSTAT Research, and online panel survey company PMI jointly conducted the survey targeting 155 local governments nationwide, excluding areas with small sample sizes such as population, and released the results in early January.

According to the analysis, Mapo-gu ranked 9th nationwide (5th in Seoul) in the comprehensive evaluation index, following Yongsan, Gangnam, Gangdong, Seocho districts in Seoul, Nam-gu in Ulsan, Dongnae-gu in Busan, Namwon-si in Jeonbuk, Gwacheon-si in Gyeonggi, and others.

Among these, Mapo-gu ranked 1st in the daily safety sector evaluation, which assesses the number of crime prevention CCTVs, the number of 119 safety centers, the number of police substations and other security facilities, the number of traffic accidents, and residents' perception (subjective indicators) among the 16 autonomous districts of Seoul with populations between 300,000 and 500,000.

The district was evaluated as having well-established infrastructure necessary for crime and accident prevention and response.

Meanwhile, without considering population size and targeting all autonomous districts in Seoul, Mapo-gu ranked 4th overall in the daily safety sector.

In particular, it recorded top rankings by exceeding the Seoul regional average scores in economic activity, daily safety, and health care areas.

Additionally, Mapo-gu's highest scores in detailed sub-areas were income (92.29) in economic activity, safety infrastructure (68.07) in daily safety, health status (95.07) in health care, and residential conditions (92.93) in the residential environment sector.

The reasons for Mapo-gu receiving such evaluations are attributed to major projects extensively carried out across all four areas since the launch of the 7th local government administration, including ▲planting 5 million trees ▲Mapo-type job projects ▲MH Mapo Housing project ▲job seeker youth education and support for regular employment wage subsidies ▲establishment of the latest negative pressure screening clinics for COVID-19 response ▲opening and operation of the Mapo Publishing Culture Promotion Center.

Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Every resident of Mapo-gu has the right to be safe and happy,” adding, “This year, especially through projects aimed at safety from COVID-19 and recovery of the local economy, I will fulfill my responsibilities and roles as mayor.”
