Jeonnam Province Selects 'Gohado Yi Chungmugong Pine Forest' as January's Must-Visit Premium Forest This Year

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province announced on the 17th that it has selected Mokpo's "Gohado Yi Sun-sin Pine Forest" as the "January Namdo Premium Forest" to visit this year, recognized for its high historical and cultural value.

Jeonnam Province selected 12 beautiful forests for each season through expert evaluation and online voting to widely promote Namdo's premium forests as tourist resources for relaxation and healing travel destinations.

Among them, Mokpo's "Gohado Yi Sun-sin Pine Forest," which won the grand prize, was chosen as the forest of January.

The "Gohado Yi Sun-sin Pine Forest," which can be reached immediately after crossing the Mokpo Bridge, is beautiful throughout all four seasons.

About 500-year-old pine trees form a 3-hectare colony, and the sea view from the forest is so beautiful that it is known as a premium forest that heals the mind.

Gomsong (곰솔) belongs to the pine family and is sometimes called Haesong (海松) or Heuksong (黑松) depending on the region.

It is called Gomsong because its needles are tougher than those of ordinary pine trees, grows along the seaside as Haesong, and its bark color is darker than that of pine trees, hence also called Heuksong.

"Gohado Yi Sun-sin Pine Forest" served as a naval strategic base during the Imjin War, where General Yi Sun-sin stayed for 106 days to conduct military training, and during the Jeongyu War, ships were built and repaired here, leading to victory over Japan.

Within the forest, the Gochunggak Pavilion and the historic site commemorating General Yi Sun-sin's achievements, including the monument, are preserved and managed as the Gohado Yi Sun-sin Historic Site (Jeollanam-do Monument No. 10).

Oh Deuk-sil, head of the Jeonnam Province Forest Conservation Division, said, "Mokpo Gohado Yi Sun-sin Pine Forest is a beautiful forest with history and culture," adding, "We will continue to discover and manage hidden premium forests in Jeonnam and lead the Blue Economy's Blue Tour."
