British Grandmother Celebrates 106th Birthday After Overcoming COVID-19

[Asia Economy Reporter Hana Na] A 106-year-old grandmother in the UK overcame the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) and celebrated her birthday.

Mary Nicholson (106), who lives in a nursing home in Merseyside, UK, was born during World War I and has set a remarkable record by living through two world wars and two pandemics, including the Spanish flu.

According to the Daily Mail and The Sun on the 16th, Grandma Nicholson tested positive for COVID-19 on December 31 of last year.

However, Nicholson overcame COVID-19 and celebrated her 106th birthday on the 12th. Although she was unmarried and had no children, many of her acquaintances sent birthday gifts and congratulatory cards on her birthday.

She said, "It was truly a grand 106th birthday. I had a slight cold today, but I feel better now," adding, "I look forward to seeing my family again. My family is my everything."

Regarding the secret to her longevity, she revealed, "Whole milk (milk with the cream left in), cream, butter, and a little whiskey every night." Most of what Nicholson mentioned is generally known as foods to avoid for health reasons as one ages.

After recovering from COVID-19, Nicholson laughed and said, "I feel really good now. Nothing can stop me."

Her nephew, Jean Humphries (68), said, "Grandma is very independent, fun, and lovable," adding, "She lost her parents when she was young and lived through two world wars, but she never gave up and always inspires us with her hard work."

Nicholson was born on January 12, 1915, during World War I and lost her mother at the age of five. Her father also served as a medical orderly in World War I and died shortly after being exposed to poison gas. Afterward, Nicholson worked as a restaurant cook and lived alone until the age of 102 before moving into a nursing facility.
