[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] President-elect Joe Biden officially expressed his intention on the 15th (local time) to accelerate the vaccination against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Biden reiterated his goal to vaccinate 100 million people within 100 days after taking office, stating that all people aged 65 and older and frontline workers will be vaccinated.
Biden said, "I hope people now understand that this is not a political issue," adding, "This is about saving lives." He continued, "I know it has become a partisan issue, but this is a patriotic act we are asking of you," emphasizing, "We are at war with this virus."
He pointed out that the cumulative COVID-19 death toll in the United States is approaching a grim milestone of 400,000, calling it "shocking," and described the U.S. vaccine rollout so far as a "miserable failure."
Biden announced that he will use the Defense Production Act to expand the supply of syringes, needles, vials, and various equipment necessary for vaccination through private companies. He also said, "Now is the time to set big goals and pursue them with courage and confidence because the nation's health is literally at risk."
He stated that on his first day in office, he will direct the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to establish federally supported community vaccination centers in places such as school gymnasiums, sports centers, and community centers.
