[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] Violinist Lim Chang-ho (photo) will hold a solo recital at Lotte Concert Hall on the 30th.
Lim Chang-ho is the first performer in the newly launched "Lotte Concert Hall Saturday Emerging Artist Series" by the Lotte Cultural Foundation. The "Lotte Concert Hall Saturday Emerging Artist Series" was created to revitalize the classical music market, which has been stagnant due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, and to provide performance opportunities for artists who have lost chances to perform. Selected artists are given the opportunity to hold solo recitals at Lotte Concert Hall.
Lim Chang-ho, a graduate of Seoul Arts High School, earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from The Juilliard School in the United States. He completed his doctoral studies at Manhattan School of Music and debuted in collaboration with the New York Symphonietta. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, and is currently teaching at Rutgers University in New Jersey. As concertmaster of the Bergen Symphony in New Jersey, he is active in performances based in New York.
At this solo recital, Lim Chang-ho will perform Szymanowski's "The Fountain of Arethusa," Respighi's Violin Sonata, Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 7, and Wieniawski's "Polonaise."
Lim Chang-ho stated, "I selected works that clearly showcase the beauty and characteristics of each era rather than widely known popular pieces."
"The Fountain of Arethusa" is one of three pieces composed by Szymanowski based on Greek mythology. It is a poetic work filled with impressionistic and expressionistic techniques. The depiction of water and the scene where Arethusa flees from Alpheus are realistically conveyed. Respighi's Violin Sonata is a late Romantic piece that begins with anxiety, passes through anger and nostalgia, and ends in tragedy.
Beethoven's Sonata No. 7 was composed in 1802 when Beethoven, seeking treatment for his hearing loss, left Vienna, Austria, and settled in the outskirts of Heiligenstadt. During that year, the melancholic Beethoven even wrote a will.
Pianist Choo Yeon-kyung will accompany the performance.
