Yeongdeungpo-gu Former Yangpyeong 2-dong Community Center Remodeling 'Creative Arts Education Center' Groundbreaking Ceremony

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) will begin remodeling the former Yangpyeong 2-dong Community Center at the end of this month to create the ‘Creative Arts Education Center,’ a dedicated space for art education aimed at fostering creativity and sensitivity in children and adolescents.

In 2019, the district applied for Seoul City’s ‘Support Project for Localized Child and Youth Arts Education Centers’ and received a subsidy of 1.5 billion KRW after gaining strong support for operating programs that provide diverse and universal cultural and artistic activities difficult to experience in individual schools.

After completing the design service for the center in November last year and undergoing administrative procedures such as contract review and bidding, the district is fully committed to the construction of the center, aiming for completion in May and opening in June.

The newly renovated ‘Creative Arts Education Center’ will be a building with a site area of 450.6㎡ and a total floor area of 506.17㎡. The first floor will include a multipurpose room, cooking room, and community space; the second floor will house a media lab, program rooms, and an operations office; and the third floor will be designed as a free space.

As the center is being established with the goal of realizing an ‘educational city where dreams come true’ through fostering creativity and sensitivity in children and adolescents, it plans to maximize the use of related infrastructure such as art education experts active in the region and provide creative and arts education programs linked to the curriculum and the free semester system.

Furthermore, the center intends to actively develop and incorporate programs reflecting the opinions of children and adolescents, focusing on user-centered operation.

The Yeongdeungpo Cultural Foundation, which will be responsible for the operation and management of the Creative Arts Education Center, conducted a pilot ‘Youth Autonomous Project’ for about a month starting early December last year, supporting various activities that promote autonomous rest, learning, communication, socializing, gatherings, and play among children and adolescents, contributing to the creation of a healthy youth culture.

Accordingly, the district expects the foundation’s rich experience to play a significant role in identifying the educational needs of children and adolescents and in planning, developing, and operating collaborative cultural programs with guiding teachers.

Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “The Creative Arts Education Center will become a cultural and arts education hub supporting creative and emotional education and character development, which are core future competencies students must have.” He added, “We will work harder to create Yeongdeungpo as a premium educational city where dreams come true by developing various educational spaces and programs where youth can joyfully learn and freely play.”
