Gwanak-gu, First Autonomous District Female Life Oral Historian Builds 'Gwanak Her Story' Archive

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) is launching the construction of the ‘Gwanak Her Story’ archive, which records the life oral histories of local women under the theme of women’s lives intertwined with the history of Gwanak.

‘Gwanak Her Story’ is the first archive construction project in a Seoul autonomous district to feature women as the main protagonists. It was planned to reexamine the roles and contributions of women in the process of local development, to foster women’s pride through proper evaluation, and to contribute to the spread of a culture of gender equality.

This project aims to record the rapidly disappearing and forgotten memories and living heritage during urbanization by documenting the village scenes and lives of local women through life oral histories before they are lost, passing them on to future generations.

The district plans to build an online digital archive on the district website by the first half of 2022 through database creation of systematically and continuously produced oral materials, including E-Books, interview videos, and photo files.

Additionally, the district will recruit and train the ‘Gwanak Her Story Oral History Recording Team’ for systematic collection and management of records. By establishing a cooperative system with residents, related organizations, and village communities, women will participate as the main recorders, contributing to strengthening local community activity capabilities.

The recruitment period for the Gwanak Her Story oral history recorders is until the 22nd of this month, seeking 10 women residents of Gwanak-gu who are interested in oral history and capable of using computers.

Applications can be submitted by downloading the application form from the district office website (News & Notices → Announcements) and submitting it in person, by mail, or by email (dooboo20@ga.go.kr) to the Women and Family Division of Gwanak-gu Office.

The selected oral history recorders will complete a four-month professional training program in cooperation with the Korea Oral History Research Institute and will begin discovering narrators and collecting oral histories starting in July.

Meanwhile, the district was designated as a ‘Women-Friendly City’ by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family in 2019, implementing various women-friendly city projects aimed at empowering women, providing care, and ensuring safety. This women’s life oral history archive project is part of one of the five major goals of the Women-Friendly City initiative, which is to strengthen women’s community activity capabilities.

Mayor Park Jun-hee stated, “Along with the remarkable development of Gwanak, we will systematically build a women’s history archive to remember and preserve the footprints and roles of women who were witnesses and protagonists of the local community’s history. Researching the life histories of local women is important not only for women but also for revealing the identity of the region’s past, present, and future. I hope the Gwanak Her Story archive will become a memory repository for the local community.”
