[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] A doctor who received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in the United States has died, prompting authorities to launch an investigation.
According to foreign media including The New York Times (NYT) on the 12th (local time), a gynecologist in his 50s living in Miami, Florida, died of a cerebral hemorrhage on the 3rd, 16 days after receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
His wife explained in a Facebook post on the 5th that her husband received the vaccine on the 18th of last month, and three days later, petechiae appeared on his hands and feet, leading him to visit the emergency room. He was subsequently diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), admitted to the intensive care unit, and eventually passed away.
His wife claimed that her husband developed ITP as a reaction to the vaccine, stating, "People need to be aware that side effects from the vaccine can occur." In an interview with the NYT, she said, "My husband had no underlying conditions. He had never had a significant reaction to any previous treatments or vaccines," and explained that he did not smoke and was not taking any medications.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a statement, "We will review this case as more information becomes available," adding, "If new facts are confirmed and necessary measures are required, we will promptly notify the public." The autopsy results have not yet been released.
Pfizer stated in a press release that it is actively investigating the death and "currently sees no direct connection between the vaccination and the death."
