[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Kakao is launching a subscription service on KakaoTalk that allows unlimited use of emoticons for a monthly fee.
On the 13th, Kakao announced the launch of its monthly subscription product, 'Emoticon Plus.' To celebrate the launch, it will be temporarily available for 3,900 KRW, and a free trial will be offered to subscribers for one month.
By purchasing Emoticon Plus, users can download and switch up to five different emoticons of their choice. They will have access to over 150,000 emotes (individual emoticons used in messages) freely. This offers a wider selection compared to purchasing single items (2,500 KRW), enabling richer emotional expression.
Automatic recommendations matching the message content, such as situation or emotion, are also provided. For example, when a user types a word in the KakaoTalk chat window, emoticons are recommended, and emoticons fitting the context of the conversation are filtered and displayed. Frequently used situational keywords like ‘Thank you’, ‘Sorry’, ‘What are you doing?’, ‘Busy’, and ‘Sleepy’ organize emoticons for convenient use.
To subscribe, users need to create a ‘KakaoTalk Wallet’ in the KakaoTalk More tab and then apply for the subscription. The existing single-item purchase process remains unchanged.
A Kakao representative said, "Over the past nine years, we have led the growth of the emoticon ecosystem by listening to the opinions of numerous creators and users, and we are now introducing a new monthly subscription product. We hope users can express various emotions and situations they encounter in KakaoTalk conversations more freely and richly."
Kakao also officially launched 'Talk Storage Plus,' which has been in beta service for the past year. Previously, only KakaoTalk chat history could be backed up, but with Talk Storage Plus, digital assets scattered across each chat room?such as photos, videos, files, links, and contacts?can be safely stored in one place. Real-time automatic backup is possible, making it useful in unavoidable situations like phone loss or damage. Talk Storage Plus offers 100GB of storage for 990 KRW per month.
