Criticism Comparing US Involvement During Hong Kong Protests
"Feels Like Watching a Thrilling Action Movie" Sarcasm
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] China sharply mocked American democracy over the incident in which supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol. Referring to the praise given to protesters demanding democracy in Hong Kong, China also pointed out the double standards of the Western world. It shows the reality of American society.
According to China's state-run Global Times on the 7th, political commentators and some netizens in China evaluated the violent incident in which Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC as "American democracy has fractured."
Shen Yi, a professor at the Graduate School of International Relations at Fudan University, stated, "This incident clearly shows the collapse of the beacon of democracy called America," and argued, "The bubble of democracy, freedom, and universal values that America has long deceived with has burst."
Chinese netizens have also focused on this incident, pouring out criticism and ridicule. According to the state-run Global Times, Chinese netizens left comments containing expressions such as 'chaos,' 'revenge,' and 'appropriate.' One Chinese netizen wrote, "A beautiful scene is unfolding in America," sarcastically adding, "American politicians have long called rioters in other countries freedom fighters. Now they are finally getting their revenge," and said, "It feels like watching an exciting action movie."
Criticism of America's major allies also continued. One netizen said, "British Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently supported protesters during the Hong Kong democracy movement and pressured China," and asked, "Then why does he not openly support the protesters in America this time?" A political commentator told the Global Times, "What we saw today is the product of America's extremely polarized political environment," criticizing, "There is a crack in American democracy."
