[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler announced that she would not raise objections to the certification of Georgia's presidential election electoral votes, considering the Capitol riot by supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to the U.S. political media outlet The Hill on the 6th (local time), Senator Loeffler attended the joint session of the House and Senate held at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., and said, "I am withdrawing my plan to object to the certification of Georgia's presidential electoral votes." This change in stance was due to the unprecedented violent incident, where four people died in clashes between police and protesters, causing political pressure.
Loeffler stated, "These events have made me reconsider my previous plan," adding, "Conscience does not allow me to oppose the certification of the electoral votes." She further said, "The illegal attack on Congress by the protesters is abhorrent," and added, "I intended to oppose the vote to protect America's sacred democratic process, but that intention was attacked."
Earlier, 13 Republican senators, including Loeffler, had announced their intention to 'oppose' the certification of the presidential electoral vote results. President-elect Joe Biden's victory is finalized only after Congress certifies the electoral vote results from each state. President Trump claimed that if Republican lawmakers challenge the certification process and Vice President Mike Pence refuses to certify the results, the election outcome could be overturned.
However, the reckless protests by Trump supporters on that day backfired. The protesters gathered to protest the previous election results and to obstruct Congress's certification of the election results, but some rioted by storming the building and occupying the meeting hall. Especially, casualties occurred during clashes with police trying to suppress the riot, significantly narrowing the political space for Republican politicians.
