Seoul Gangseo-gu Installs 34 Logojectors at 17 High Passive Smoking Complaint Areas... Triple Benefits of Smoking Cessation Promotion, Urban Aesthetics Improvement, and Nighttime Crime Prevention
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Noh Hyun-song) has actively taken steps to create a smoke-free environment using logoprojectors to protect residents' health from smoking.
Cigarette butts scattered on the streets and spit stains cause passersby to frown.
Moreover, seeing people smoking while removing their masks or wearing them improperly (tuksseukeu) raises concerns about secondhand smoke and worries about the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Accordingly, the district designated 17 locations where many complaints related to secondhand smoke occur and installed a total of 34 smoking cessation promotional logoprojectors (LED landscape lighting), two units per location, to spread a smoke-free culture in the community.
The installation sites were designated by analyzing big data of received complaints, including Gangseo-gu Office's food alley and areas around Gayang Station, Hwagok Station, Magok Station, and Songjeong Station.
A logoprojector is a device that projects specific letters or images with LED lights onto the ground or walls.
Existing no-smoking signs were less effective at night due to poor visibility, but with the installation of these logoprojectors, no-smoking messages can be more noticeable even at night.
The newly installed logoprojectors are equipped with object recognition sensors and normally display the message "Gangseo-gu Public Health Center Smoking Cessation Clinic."
Especially when a person approaches, the sensor recognizes them and changes the display to smoking cessation promotional messages such as "Smoking cessation is a pension for your health," "You can quit smoking too," and "A fine of 100,000 KRW will be imposed for smoking in no-smoking areas," which is expected to attract more attention.
The district expects that the installation of these logoprojectors will have triple benefits: creating a smoke-free environment, improving nighttime urban aesthetics, and preventing crime.
A district official said, "We installed these logoprojectors to encourage smokers to quit and prevent secondhand smoke damage," and added, "We will continue to strive to improve residents' health through discovering various smoking cessation promotional programs and active guidance and enforcement."
