ATM Dispenses 1.31 Million Won
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] In Naples, Italy, dozens of banknotes suddenly poured out from an automated teller machine (ATM), prompting local police to investigate whether hacking was involved.
On the 29th (local time), local media such as TGCOM24 reported that dozens of 20-euro and 50-euro banknotes spilled out from an ATM located in the center of Naples on the 26th.
Some pedestrians were startled by the sudden situation and stopped in their tracks.
Although it was the Christmas holiday season, there were reportedly not many people on the streets due to restrictions on going out to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
The situation was handled by a 51-year-old man from Morocco. Passing by the ATM at the time, he gathered the banknotes that had fallen on the ground and headed to a nearby police station. The total amount of banknotes he handed over was 980 euros (approximately 1.31 million KRW).
Local media highlighted the good deed of this African immigrant, carried out amid the economic difficulties many people are facing due to the COVID-19 crisis.
The police notified the financial institution managing the ATM about the machine malfunction and are investigating the possibility of system hacking.
