Honam University Launches 'AI Convergence Demonstration Center'... Establishing a Foundation to Become a Leading AI University

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] Honam University has taken steps to strengthen its status as a leading AI hub university.

On the 28th, Honam University announced that it held the 'AI Convergence Demonstration Center Launch Ceremony,' which will showcase new services by applying artificial intelligence technology to various industries.

As part of the opening event of Honam University's LINC+ Project Group's '2020 Industry-Academia Cooperation Exchange Day,' the launch ceremony featured a collaboration between Honam University's Department of Fire Administration, Gwangju Fire Department, and AI robot specialist company Zeta Bank. They simulated a scenario where a COVID-19 case occurred inside a building, demonstrating AI disinfection activities using prevention kits and robot remote control.

Zeta Bank, the AI robot specialist company that participated in the demonstration, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Honam University earlier this month to establish a cooperative system for operating educational programs in AI robots and AI healthcare fields. They also agreed to jointly promote various employment-linked programs such as undergraduate education by AI robot experts, industry-academia-linked education, field training, and internships.

The AI Convergence Demonstration Center will serve as a hub for creating an AI ecosystem and fostering industry by expanding the functions of the AI Convergence Campus, nurturing practical talent for the new autonomous driving industry, and implementing artificial intelligence technologies to respond to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, applying and converging these technologies across various industries to develop new services.

Son Kyung-jong, Director of the Gwangju Metropolitan City AI Industry Bureau, said in a video message, “The AI projects that Gwangju City is fully committed to require talent development as the most important factor, alongside infrastructure such as the AI cluster, the nation's largest data center, and supercomputing systems. We expect that the talents produced by Honam University will help create new business models aligned with the AI projects pursued by Gwangju City.”

Park Sang-chul, President of Honam University, stated, “As the only AI-specialized university in Korea and the only Ministry of Education Fourth Industrial Revolution Innovation Leading University in Gwangju, Honam University has achieved excellent results through differentiated customized education foundations and field-oriented curricula as a hub university for industry-academia cooperation in the Honam region. We will fulfill our social responsibility as a regional hub university that produces talent leading the AI field.”
