[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) is promoting the ‘Youth Hope Design Dream Coaching’ project, which provides free opportunities for low-income households' youth to attend tutoring academies and receive textbook fees, until December next year.

The ‘Hope Design Dream Coaching’ project supports students from low-income families who, despite their passion and motivation for learning, cannot afford academy lectures due to financial difficulties, by offering free tuition and textbook fees.

Since its inception in 2010, it has provided learning opportunities to an average of more than 120 students annually.

Additionally, in January 2017, the district signed a tripartite agreement for the ‘Youth Hope Design Dream Coaching Project’ with the Yeongdeungpo Dream Coaching Academy Volunteer Group and the Seoul Social Welfare Community Chest, establishing a foundation for the spread of a donation culture through public-private cooperation and smooth project operation.

The 2021 Dream Coaching project, which started in December this year, will operate for one year until December next year, selecting a total of 85 elementary, middle, and high school students from households with income below 120% of the median income through an application process in October.

The selected students will receive free opportunities to attend single-subject, comprehensive, and other desired courses, along with related textbooks, for one year.

At 28 academies belonging to the ‘Yeongdeungpo Dream Coaching Academy Volunteer Group,’ lectures are provided as talent donations, and the district supports part of the textbook fees through the Social Welfare Community Chest.

Although classes were temporarily suspended this year due to COVID-19, free tuition benefits were provided to a total of 88 students, resulting in approximately 300 million KRW worth of academy fee support, according to district officials.

Furthermore, on the 9th, the district awarded commendations for exemplary citizens to four academy heads belonging to the Yeongdeungpo Dream Coaching Academy Volunteer Group participating in the Youth Hope Design Dream Coaching project, and plans to continuously enhance the spread of sharing culture and talent donation activities within the region.

Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “Providing equal learning opportunities regardless of each youth’s background and circumstances is a natural responsibility that the local community must undertake,” and added, “We will continue to offer generous support so that more youth can freely pursue and realize their dreams without economic burdens.”
