[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) has expanded and opened the 7th section of Dorim-ro (Sin-gil-dong 355-698~355-709), completing the expansion construction on both sides of Dorim-ro, which has been underway since 1997, after 23 years this month.

Compensation for buildings and land was completed for 14 land parcels, approximately 200 meters in length, in the upward section of Dorim-ro, which is the area where the Sin-gil 16 Redevelopment Promotion Zone was lifted, and construction of the 7th section began on August 7.

For the 7th section of Dorim-ro, 8.2 billion KRW out of a total project cost of over 50 billion KRW (city funds) was invested, and after completing the ownership transfer procedures, the project to expand the existing 30-meter road width to 35 meters was actively carried out.

As a result, the existing one-way three-lane road was expanded to four lanes, and the sidewalk width was also increased, easing vehicle traffic and improving pedestrian convenience.

The last 7th section of the Dorim-ro expansion project is the area where the Sin-gil 16 Redevelopment Promotion Zone was lifted, densely packed with shops and buildings, making it one of the regions with very poor traffic and pedestrian environments.

Accordingly, the district linked with the Sin-gil 14 Redevelopment Promotion Zone and granted project approval conditions for 100 meters out of the remaining 300 meters of the Dorim-ro expansion project, expanding the road.

Additionally, with subsidies from Seoul City, building demolition and land compensation were carried out for the remaining 200-meter section, completing the expansion process for the entire 7th section of Dorim-ro.

Thus, the expansion construction of Dorim-ro’s east and west roads, spanning a total of 1,150 meters from the southern end of Dorim Overpass to Sin-gil Square, which has been underway since 1997, was finally completed after 23 years.

Dorim-ro is a major arterial road connecting the central administrative areas of Dongjak, Guro, and Gwanak districts, passing through Mullae-dong in Yeongdeungpo-gu and Guro-dong in Guro-gu.

Also, passing through the Sin-gil Redevelopment Promotion District and nearby redevelopment areas, complaints from local residents about traffic congestion caused by the recent sharp increase in construction vehicles, as well as noise and dust from construction, have been increasing day by day.

With the completion of this road expansion project, the district expects to establish a connected road network, improve traffic flow on Gamasan-ro and Sinpung-ro, and greatly contribute to improving the living environment of local residents and balanced regional development.

In addition, the sidewalk space previously occupied by shops near the road was reconstructed into a safe and pleasant pedestrian walkway, with LED streetlights installed and street trees maintained, focusing on creating a pedestrian-friendly road environment prioritizing pedestrian convenience.

Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “With the opening of the Dorim-ro expansion project, which shines after 23 years of progress, a smooth vehicle flow and a safe and pleasant pedestrian-first sidewalk environment have been created. Despite the many inconveniences caused by the long-term construction, I sincerely thank the residents for their deep understanding and cooperation. We will continue to do our best to improve traffic flow and create a pleasant road environment in Yeongdeungpo.”
