Songpa-gu Operates LED Ground Traffic Signals at 44 Crosswalks

Expected Improvement in Pedestrian Traffic Safety

Songpa-gu Operates LED Ground Traffic Signals at 44 Crosswalks

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) has completed the installation of LED floor-type pedestrian signals (floor signals) at 44 crosswalks in the area to ensure the safe crossing of pedestrians, and will begin operation from the 21st.

The floor signals are smart traffic safety facilities where LED panels embedded in the crosswalk surface change between red and green according to pedestrian signals, providing additional signal information to pedestrians.

Designed to prevent accidents involving so-called "smombie" pedestrians who walk while looking at their smartphones without paying attention to their surroundings, the floor signals also greatly help the walking safety of vulnerable road users such as wheelchair users and children, whose eye levels are lower.

This year, the district completed the installation of floor signals at a total of 44 crosswalks: 17 in pedestrian-dense areas such as Jamsil Station and 27 in school zones. These will operate day and night. Next year, an additional 19 locations around elementary schools will be equipped, actively working to reduce pedestrian crosswalk traffic accidents.

In particular, for school zones in front of elementary schools, in addition to installing floor signals, the district plans to gradually expand the use of signal and speeding enforcement CCTV, yellow carpets, yellow footprints, and runway-type crosswalks, focusing all efforts on preventing children's traffic accidents.

Park Seong-su, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, “We will take the lead in expanding traffic safety infrastructure and do our best to create a traffic environment where both vulnerable road users and drivers can feel safe.”
