AI Speaking Practice System Implementation Screen (Provided by the Ministry of Education)
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] A system that allows practicing English speaking based on artificial intelligence (AI) has been developed and will be distributed.
The Ministry of Education and the Korea Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) announced on the 21st that 'AI PengTalk' will be fully introduced to elementary schools nationwide starting March next year.
This system supports a practice service that enables one-on-one conversations between AI and students by utilizing voice recognition and natural language processing technologies.
It provides pronunciation correction services to practice words, sentences, and dialogues extracted from the 2015 revised English curriculum, five types of English textbooks, and EBS English educational materials. Learning can be done using computers and portable devices. Additionally, it supports the Learning Management System (LMS) and Class Management System (CMS), allowing students, parents, and teachers to receive information on individual students' learning status and analysis of learning outcomes. A game-based learning method has also been introduced, where students earn items by learning a certain amount, using the popular character 'Pengsu'.
According to the Ministry of Education, pilot use with students showed statistically significant changes in self-assessed improvement in English proficiency and average English learning time in pre- and post-evaluations.
From the 22nd, intensive online training will be conducted for on-site teachers. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hye said, "We ask for active interest and cooperation from teachers so that the speaking practice system can be actively utilized in the field," and added, "Through this system, we will provide an equitable English learning environment anywhere for elementary school students nationwide."
