Seongdong-gu Apartment Community Revitalization Project Yields Abundant Results

Wangsimni Xi Apartment and Others Sweep Gold and Silver Awards in 'Seoul Community Revitalization Contest'... Seongsu Kumho 3rd Apartment Wins Grand Prize, Continuing Success in Community Revitalization Projects

Seongdong-gu Apartment Community Revitalization Project Yields Abundant Results Pengsoo Rice Ball Making Program Promoted as a Community Revitalization Project at Wangsimni KCC Switzen Apartment

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh)’s Wangsimni Xi Apartment and Wangsimni KCC Switzen Apartment won the Gold and Silver Awards respectively in the ‘2020 Seoul Apartment Community Revitalization Contest.’

This selection was made by choosing seven complexes with outstanding community cases and activities among 298 complexes from 25 autonomous districts of Seoul participating in the contest. Seongdong-gu achieved the great feat of having two complexes awarded and being selected as excellent complexes for six consecutive years since 2015.

First, Wangsimni Xi Apartment received favorable reviews for its active non-face-to-face projects using residents’ online communities at a time when community activities were sluggish in many complexes due to COVID-19.

Eco-friendly programs such as using eco-friendly straws, making eco-friendly wax wraps, and making cotton masks were conducted online through SNS, and various projects considerate of all age groups were promoted, including mushroom growing to overcome COVID blues, veranda water play, untact cooking contests, and senior haircut services, contributing to the spread of a healthy residential community culture.

Wangsimni KCC Switzen created a healing space in the city by cultivating rooftop gardens and planting trees in the shared spaces within the complex, which could have otherwise been barren. Activities such as making Pengsoo rice balls with children and families, children’s bubble experiences, and balloon art performances received great responses from residents.

In addition, Seongsu Kumho 3rd Apartment won the grand prize in the LH-hosted ‘2020 Apartment Non-Face-to-Face Community Activity Cases and Ideas Contest,’ showing that active community revitalization projects in the region are bearing fruit.

An official from the district said, “Since 2015, the district has continuously supported community revitalization by providing project funds and dispatching community planners for consulting so that residents of apartment complexes can resolve conflicts within the complex and local issues through resident-led initiatives and expand communication among neighbors.”

Meanwhile, a total of 42 complexes were selected for the Seongdong-gu apartment community revitalization contest. Even amid COVID-19, they are continuing communication activities not only within complexes but also between regions by combining online and offline activities such as online meet-and-greets, bedroom culture classes, separate waste disposal campaigns, and green festival projects.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Being selected as excellent complexes this year despite the difficulties in community activities due to COVID-19 is the fruit of residents’ efforts. The district will actively support communication between complexes through building community online platforms and strive to create a community culture together with neighbors.”
