Measurement of 'Maximal Oxygen Uptake' as a Health Status Predictor
Measured in Daily Life, Exercise Encouraged if Levels are Low
Available from watchOS 7.2… Applies to Apple Watch Series 3 and Later
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] A feature that analyzes maximum oxygen uptake to inform users of their health status and motivate exercise will be introduced on the Apple Watch.
On the 14th (local time), Apple introduced a cardiopulmonary fitness analysis feature called 'Aerobic Fitness' in watchOS 7.2. It measures maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 max) and shows the user's level relative to their gender and age group, helping improve exercise performance. The aerobic fitness levels are classified into four ranges: High, Above Average, Below Average, or Low.
Sameer Desai, Apple's Vice President of Health, explained, "Maximum oxygen uptake measures the user's aerobic fitness level, roughly indicating how well the body utilizes oxygen, and is a strong predictor of overall health. You can actually see improvements in VO2 max as you exercise more and increase exercise intensity."
Maximum oxygen uptake is an indicator of one's health status, measured higher with increased exercise. It shows how oxygen inhaled through the lungs is used in muscle tissue via the heart and blood vessels. Athletes requiring endurance monitor this indicator to measure performance. Since lower aerobic fitness levels increase the risk of health problems, consistent management helps improve health. It is especially useful for people with lung, vascular, or muscle-related conditions.
With the addition of the aerobic fitness feature on the Apple Watch, it is now possible to check it directly in the Health app. Previously, VO2 max could only be checked during high-intensity exercises such as running or outdoor walking while wearing the Apple Watch. Now, it is measured in the background even without high-intensity exercise, allowing users to check the values during daily life. Measurement is possible just by wearing the Apple Watch without visiting a clinic equipped with facilities.
If the aerobic fitness level drops, the Apple Watch sends notifications to encourage exercise. Although the criteria vary by age group, notifications can be received if the level falls below the 20th percentile. If the low level persists, another notification is sent after four months. After updating to watchOS 7.2, this feature is available on Apple Watch Series 3 and later models. It is also available on the Apple Watch SE.
Vice President Desai said, "Aerobic fitness is not only essential for marathon runners but can be a really useful indicator for everyone. Popularizing the use of maximum oxygen uptake is not just for elite athletes but also for those who exercise regularly in daily life."
