[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] On Tuesday the 15th, the cold wave is expected to continue, with morning temperatures dropping to a minimum of minus 16 degrees Celsius.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted on the 14th that due to cold air flowing in from the northwest, temperatures will fall below minus 5 degrees Celsius in most parts of the country, below minus 10 degrees Celsius in the central inland and northern Gyeongbuk regions, and daytime temperatures will remain below freezing. In the central inland and eastern Jeonbuk, temperatures will drop below minus 12 degrees Celsius, and in northern Gyeonggi, western Gangwon, northern Chungbuk, and northern Gyeongbuk, temperatures will fall below minus 15 degrees Celsius, potentially leading to an expansion and strengthening of the cold wave advisory.
Strong winds will also cause the wind chill temperature to drop further. Therefore, special attention should be paid to health management, facility maintenance such as preventing water pipe bursts, and protecting crops in vinyl greenhouses from cold damage.
The morning minimum temperatures by region are forecasted to range from minus 16 degrees to minus 3 degrees Celsius, and the daytime maximum temperatures from minus 6 degrees to 3 degrees Celsius. On the Jeolla west coast and Jeju mountain areas, due to the temperature difference between the lower atmosphere and sea surface (sea-air temperature difference), heavy snowfall is expected from cloud bands formed over the West Sea. Snow will fall heavily from the night of the day until the next morning and gradually ease during the day.
Expected snowfall amounts are 5 to 15 cm in the Jeolla west coast, Jeju mountain areas, and Ulleungdo and Dokdo; 2 to 7 cm in the southern Chungnam west coast, western Jeolla (excluding Jeolla west coast), and Jeju (excluding mountain areas); and 1 to 3 cm in the northern Chungnam west coast and inland Chungnam.
The Korea Meteorological Administration emphasized that in areas where snow is falling, visibility will decrease, and roads may become slippery as the snow freezes, so caution is required for traffic safety.
