[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] A police officer who fled the scene during a drunk driving crackdown has been suspended from duty. On the 11th, the Gwangju Bukbu Police Station announced that they had suspended Lieutenant A, who fled the drunk driving checkpoint and is under investigation as a suspected drunk driver.

The Bukbu Police Station explained that Lieutenant A admitted to drinking with an acquaintance before fleeing the checkpoint, and was suspended to exclude him from duty. Disciplinary action against Lieutenant A will be decided after the ongoing investigation into the drunk driving charges is completed.

Lieutenant A fled the drunk driving checkpoint in Yangsan-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, at around 10:30 p.m. on the 7th. Although Lieutenant A voluntarily appeared at the police station the next morning, about 10 hours later, and his blood alcohol concentration was measured at 0%, the police are investigating him as a suspected drunk driver.

Lieutenant A partially admitted to drinking and driving. The police plan to analyze CCTV footage from the bar Lieutenant A visited to determine the amount of alcohol consumed and the time elapsed after drinking before driving, then apply the Widmark formula to estimate his blood alcohol concentration at the time of driving.
