The Vegan Trend Permeating Everyday Life... Popularity of 'Certified Mark Products' in Value Consumption

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] As the vegan trend expands beyond food to beauty, household goods, fashion, and overall lifestyle, products that have obtained certification marks are gaining popularity. Unlike in the past when vegetarianism was chosen for health reasons, value consumption based on personal beliefs, sustainable growth, and environmental issues have become important, leading to an increase in people practicing a healthy vegan life.

According to global consulting firm Grand View Research on the 13th, the global vegan market size has grown at an average annual rate of 9.6% since 2018 and is expected to reach approximately KRW 29.717 trillion by 2025. In response, the distribution industry is introducing products that have officially completed vegan registration by obtaining vegan certification marks, which are granted to products that exclude animal testing in the manufacturing process and do not use animal-derived ingredients in raw materials or packaging.

Sensitive Skin from Masks, with Gentle Ingredients

Due to prolonged mask-wearing and various external environmental factors such as fine dust, skin stress has increased, changing the criteria for choosing cosmetics. The more sensitive the skin, the more important it has become to focus on soothing and moisturizing?the basics of skincare?with vegan products containing gentle ingredients that do not use harmful substances such as artificial colors, artificial fragrances, or animal-derived ingredients. This has emerged as an important consumer trend.

The Saem’s ‘Urban Eco Harakeke’ line of four products has obtained vegan certification from Italy’s V-Label. The certified products include ‘Urban Eco Harakeke Toner,’ ‘Urban Eco Harakeke Essence,’ ‘Urban Eco Harakeke Emulsion,’ and ‘Urban Eco Harakeke Cream,’ which deliver deep hydration and moist moisture to the skin with Harakeke extract from pristine New Zealand. This season, the line has been newly renewed to better reflect the needs of its main customer base.

Safe Ingredients Are More Important for Daily Use Products

As vegan beauty has established itself as a trend, the category has expanded beyond facial cosmetics to household goods. Especially for products used daily such as toothpaste, shampoo, and body wash, products that exclude harmful ingredients and contain trustworthy safe ingredients are popular.

Whitelabs’ premium powdered toothpaste ‘Flavon’ has received vegan certification from the UK Vegan Society. The UK Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark requires proof that all ingredients used?including raw materials, by-products, processed materials, and other additives?do not contain animal-derived ingredients or animal-origin ingredients, that there is no cross-contamination with genetically modified organisms or non-vegan products, and that no animal testing has been conducted.

As awareness of the ‘menstrual rights’?the right for everyone to menstruate safely and healthily?spreads, consumers who carefully check ingredients and materials when purchasing sanitary pads are increasing. Since these products come into contact with the most sensitive parts of the body, high safety standards are required. Colman offers vegan sanitary pads that exclude animal testing and have completed skin contact non-irritation tests. The ‘VEGAN OK’ mark printed on the package certifies that animal testing is excluded throughout the entire manufacturing process and that no animal-derived ingredients are included in packaging materials such as labels. Made from 100% organic cotton certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) from the cover to the absorbent core, the pads feature excellent breathability and a soft wearing feel.

Eco-Friendly Fashion, Vegan Padding on the Rise

With growing interest in environmental and animal protection, the fashion industry is also focusing on eco-friendly clothing. The range of product choices is expanding, including ‘Responsible Down Standard (RDS)’ certified items that do not forcibly collect fur from animals and vegan padding made with new materials.

Columbia’s ‘Jobs Sweep Down Jacket’ is a lightweight duck down short padding jacket made with soft-feeling lightweight materials for excellent comfort. It is filled with 80% goose down and 20% feathers certified under the ‘Responsible Down Standard (RDS),’ which ensures that feathers are not forcibly collected from live animals, thus realizing value consumption.
