[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency will open security living labs for each industry sector, starting with autonomous vehicles on the 10th, to actively support security embedding amid the accelerating ICT convergence.
This move comes in response to the growing need to strengthen the security foundation for convergence industries due to the commercialization of 5G and the spread of Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
The autonomous vehicle security living lab supports measurement and testing equipment, vulnerability inspection manuals, expert consulting, and other resources for security testing of core devices such as ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and CCU (Communication Control Unit) in a real vehicle-based simulated environment. In the future, a closed-road environment for driving tests will also be provided.
Following autonomous vehicles, security living labs for digital healthcare and smart factory sectors will open in December, and for immersive content and smart city sectors sequentially in January next year. Companies and individuals wishing to use the labs can make reservations through the Internet & Security Agency and the Information Security Industry Promotion Portal and use them free of charge.
On the 16th, an online ‘Convergence Security Technology Seminar’ will be held for interested companies and others to guide the usage methods and installed equipment of the security living labs, and to discuss trends and countermeasures in convergence security technology.
The revised Enforcement Decree and Enforcement Rules of the 'Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, etc.', which strengthen information protection measures for ‘information and communications network-connected devices’ such as IoT products, also took effect on the 10th, establishing a legal foundation for creating a safe convergence service usage environment.
The main contents of the amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the Information and Communications Network Act are as follows. First, the scope of ‘information and communications network-connected devices’ subject to information protection guideline recommendations, incident response, and certification was defined as representative industrial sectors of the convergence field. Additionally, the amendment provides grounds for awarding security vulnerability reporting bounties up to 10 million KRW and allows central administrative agencies, in consultation with the Ministry of Science and ICT, to designate specialized institutions for information protection measures. Furthermore, provisions regarding certification procedures, testing methods, and post-management for operating an information protection certification system for information and communications network-connected devices were also established.
Son Seunghyun, Director of Information Protection Network Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “With the acceleration of convergence between existing industries and ICT, proactive prevention and preemptive response to security threats have become very important. Through convergence security living labs and information protection certification, we will strive to create an environment where companies internalize security, secure products with verified security are distributed, and the public can use convergence products and services with confidence.”
