[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] LG Electronics announced on the 8th that it will commercialize transparent OLED automatic doors in collaboration with ASSA ABLOY, a global company in the door opening solutions sector.
LG Electronics and ASSA ABLOY signed a "Business Agreement for Transparent OLED Automatic Door Business" the day before at the LG Twin Towers in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. Attending the signing ceremony were Ki-moon Baek, Executive Vice President and Head of LG Electronics' Information Display (ID) Division; Dong-pil Kim, Senior Vice President in charge of overseas sales for LG Electronics' ID Division; Mikael Carleson, President and Head of Pedestrian Access Solutions at ASSA ABLOY; and Hansol Gil, CEO of ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems.
ASSA ABLOY, headquartered in Sweden, is a global leader in mechanical door locks, digital door locks, fire doors, and automatic doors. It has supplied automatic doors to major international airports such as London Heathrow Airport in the UK and Barcelona Airport in Spain. Domestically, it has installed automatic doors in large buildings including Incheon International Airport and Haeundae LCT.
The two companies will supply automatic doors made using 55-inch transparent OLED signage (model name: 55EW5G) to the market. These transparent automatic doors can display advertisements, welcome messages, building information, and various other content needed by customers, making them expected to be widely used in various locations.
Transparent OLED signage differs from LCD signage in that it does not require a backlight; each pixel emits its own light, utilizing the characteristics of OLED to increase light transmittance. It excels not only in the primary function of signage but also in interior design effects. The advantages of OLED, such as vivid image quality and wide viewing angles, are also benefits. Because of its transparent design, even when multiple panels are connected to create a large screen, there is less sense of incongruity.
LG Electronics plans to continuously expand its transparent OLED business based on its world-class technological leadership in the transparent OLED field. Transparent OLEDs can be used in places where customer interaction is important, such as hotel check-in counters and store consultation booths, especially as the importance of contactless services grows. They can be installed in museums, subways, stores, studios to attract customer attention and may be utilized in the future for autonomous vehicles or aircraft cabin interiors.
Ki-moon Baek, Executive Vice President and Head of LG Electronics' ID Division, said, "We will create the next-generation digital environment based on our world-class transparent OLED technology leadership."
