[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] On the 4th, Jeon Hae-cheol, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, was appointed as the new Minister of the Interior and Safety.


Born in 1962 in Mokpo, Jeonnam, Jeon graduated from Masan Jungang High School in Gyeongnam and the College of Law at Korea University. After passing the bar exam, he worked as a lawyer.


In 2004, after leading the Constitutional Court's decision to dismiss the impeachment motion against former President Roh Moo-hyun, he entered the Blue House as a Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs and later served as Chief Secretary for Civil Affairs. Ahead of former President Roh's retirement, he ran for the National Assembly in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, in the 2008 general election but was defeated. He was elected in the 2012 general election and served three consecutive terms.


He gained legislative experience by serving on major standing committees such as the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee, the Political Affairs Committee, the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee, and the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts. In the 21st National Assembly, he served as the Chair of the Intelligence Committee.
