[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Recently, the body of a 2-month-old baby boy was discovered in a refrigerator in an apartment in Yeosu after more than two years, shocking the public. The image of the apartment filled with piles of garbage has also been revealed.
The mother, A (43), was arrested on charges including corpse abandonment, and her 7-year-old son and the deceased baby boy's twin siblings (2), who lived in the apartment, are being cared for at a child protection shelter.
A only registered the birth of her 7-year-old son, but after delivering the twins at home, she did not register their births, so neither the community service center nor the neighbors were aware of the twins' existence.
Although child abuse was reported by a neighbor, A lied, saying the children were "the kids of a friend she knows."
On the 25th of last month, Yeosu City, together with a child protection agency, visited A's home, which was in such a terrible state filled with garbage that it was hard to believe anyone could live there.
The living room and bedrooms, as well as the beds where the family presumably stayed, were piled high with garbage.
There was no space to lie down or even walk around.
The garbage collected by Yeosu City that day amounted to 5 tons.
Yeosu City estimates that the garbage had accumulated over two years based on the manufacturing dates printed on snack bags and food packaging.
Also, there were no signs of cooking, suggesting that meals were mainly taken through delivery food.
A left home at 6 p.m. to work and returned around 2 to 3 a.m., so the abused children had to live amidst the piles of garbage.
After learning of the child abuse, Yeosu City and the protection agency separated A and the children on the 20th of last month.
The children are receiving psychological treatment at a child abuse victim shelter.
Children can stay at the shelter for up to two months, but after that, they must be placed in foster care or childcare facilities.
Experts point out that continuous psychological treatment is necessary as the children have lived in poor conditions for a long time.
