[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Oh Hwan-joo] The Muan County Council in Jeonnam (Chairman Kim Dae-hyun) issued an appeal on the 1st, urging residents to strictly adhere to quarantine rules amid growing concerns over local transmission of COVID-19.

This comes as confirmed COVID-19 cases have been consecutively reported in nearby areas such as Mokpo, Naju, and Gwangju, raising fears of spread within the region.

In the appeal, Chairman Kim Dae-hyun explained the current situation, stating, “COVID-19 is occurring simultaneously and sporadically in all areas of daily life, including family gatherings, academies, karaoke rooms, and winter kimchi-making, and the infectious disease continues in neighboring regions that share social and economic living bases, which adds to the seriousness.”

He continued, “The government and many experts have long predicted a third major wave in winter and warned that the twin-demic of COVID-19 and influenza could be much more impactful than the first and second waves. Therefore, before vaccines and treatments are available, now is the critical turning point to overcome COVID-19.”

He appealed, “I ask the residents to understand the gravity of the current situation and actively cooperate with the government and Muan County’s quarantine measures.”

In particular, he emphasized, “The mass infection cases among Jinju neighborhood leaders who returned from a training session in Jeju on the 25th of last month is an extremely serious issue that threatens the safety of the entire community. Considering the nature of the event, the composition of participants, and that most attendees were elderly, this holds significant implications for our county as well.”

Finally, he urged the executive branch to respond actively, saying, “Since our county can identify the characteristics of events in advance, such as the scale of gatherings and the composition of groups, preemptive measures like event cancellations or reductions should be taken even now. We must establish our own manuals suited to our circumstances and prepare plans to strengthen quarantine management.”
