World's First Unveiling of Electric Vehicle Dedicated Platform
Fast Charging Enables 100km Driving in 5 Minutes
Sequential Application to Ioniq 5 and Others Next Year
[Asia Economy Reporters Suyeon Woo, Jihui Kim] Hyundai Motor Group has opened the era of next-generation electric vehicles that can travel 100 km with just a 5-minute charge. Through the dedicated electric vehicle platform 'E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform)', a 'future-type electric vehicle' that combines spacious interior, reasonable price, and safety will hit the roads starting next year.
On the 2nd, Hyundai Motor Group held the 'E-GMP Discovery' event through online channels such as YouTube and unveiled the actual E-GMP for the first time in the world. E-GMP is a new platform that forms the backbone of Hyundai Motor Group's next-generation electric vehicle lineup. Starting with Hyundai's dedicated electric vehicle brand 'Ioniq' launching next year, it will be sequentially applied to next-generation electric vehicle lineups such as Kia's CV (project name). Until now, Hyundai has released electric vehicle models by modifying the existing internal combustion engine platforms like Sonata, Kona, and Tucson. ▶Related article page 12
The new electric vehicles equipped with E-GMP have significantly upgraded charging time and driving range, which were the biggest challenges of existing electric vehicles. The driving range per charge exceeds 500 km (domestic standard), the longest among currently marketed electric vehicles. Charging time has also improved to allow 80% fast charging within 18 minutes. The era of electric vehicles that can run 100 km with just a 5-minute charge is approaching.
Space utilization has also been greatly enhanced. E-GMP places the battery on the floor and reduces the space previously occupied by the engine and transmission, creating an optimized structure dedicated solely to electric vehicles.
Additionally, the application of a modular and standardized integrated platform enables the rapid launch of various new models and is expected to reduce the final consumer price of electric vehicles through cost savings. Hyundai Motor Group plans to apply new technologies such as a new power system (PE), multi-fast charging technology, and V2G (Vehicle to Grid) to next-generation dedicated electric vehicles to provide an evolved electrified mobility experience. The world's first applied multi-fast charging technology allows 400V and 800V compatible charging without separate parts. With V2G technology, electric vehicles can be used as a type of energy storage system (ESS), supplying power to home appliances during outdoor activities and even charging other electric vehicles.
Fayez Abdul Rahman, Executive Vice President and Head of Vehicle Architecture Development Center at Hyundai-Kia Motors, said, "E-GMP is the first technological milestone in entering the next-generation electric vehicle era and will demonstrate a new level of electric vehicle driving performance."
