[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] LG Uplus is promoting an educational support project for children of military personnel in collaboration with the Army and Korea University.
On the 30th, LG Uplus signed a business agreement at its Yongsan headquarters to support the education of children of military personnel who face difficulties adapting to school life and studies due to frequent transfers. Hwang Hyun-sik, President of LG Uplus, Nam Young-shin, Chief of Staff of the Army, and Jeong Jin-taek, President of Korea University, along with other officials attended the signing ceremony.
Military families have found it difficult to provide a stable environment for their children due to frequent relocations caused by duty station changes, difficulties commuting during missions, and feelings of isolation from remote area assignments. In fact, the transfer rate of military children is known to be more than 2.5 times higher than that of general students.
LG Uplus will provide ▲communication equipment and infrastructure for untact (non-face-to-face) learning and mentoring ▲the educational content service 'U+ Elementary Country' ▲and dedicated smartpads. Korea University will utilize its university student volunteer group and educational curriculum, while the Army will leverage its regional cooperation network and community.
For the first year of the project, Ganseong Elementary School in Goseong-gun, Gangwon Province, was selected as the target. Military children attending Ganseong Elementary will be provided with the U+ Elementary Country service and dedicated smartpads free of charge. University student volunteers from Korea University will be matched with elementary student mentees to conduct non-face-to-face individual learning guidance and mentoring using U+ Elementary Country.
Children of military personnel in frontline areas can use U+ Elementary Country to engage in advanced review and preview of the regular elementary school curriculum through 'EBS Smart Perfect Score King,' as well as access ▲'Todo Math,' the number one math education app in the children's and education categories on app stores in 20 countries ▲the English reading program 'Reading Gate' ▲the elementary English newspaper 'Kids Times' ▲Mun Jeong-ah Chinese language program ▲and science experiments and coding learning.
The educational support project for children of military personnel, jointly conducted by LG Uplus, the Army, and Korea University, will expand to eight regions centered on Goseong-gun, Yanggu-gun, and Cheorwon-gun in Gangwon Province. Additionally, future-sharing education will be provided for high school military children who wish to enter university. Various experiential activities such as LG Uplus's 5G service experience, Army barracks experience, Korea University campus tours, and invitations to the Korea-Yonsei University sports match will be conducted in accordance with social distancing measures.
President Hwang Hyun-sik said, "We plan to maximize the use of our resources and capabilities to resolve educational inequality through ICT and strengthen community competitiveness," adding, "We will continue to cooperate so that military personnel can fulfill their national defense duties with peace of mind without worrying about their children's education."
