Creation of 'Yellow School Zone' Around Children's Protection Area in Front of Gyeongsu Elementary School, Seongdong-gu

Entire Facilities Including Roads, Safety Fences, and Curbs Painted Yellow to Enhance Symbolism and Visibility for Traffic Accident Prevention

Creation of 'Yellow School Zone' Around Children's Protection Area in Front of Gyeongsu Elementary School, Seongdong-gu A pilot project called the 'Seongdong-style Yellow School Zone' was implemented, changing all roads, safety fences, and curbstones within the school zone in front of Gyeongsu Elementary School to yellow.

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) has pilot-established the ‘Seongdong-type Yellow School Zone’ by painting all facilities, including roads within the school zone in front of Gyeongsu Elementary School, in the safety protection color ‘yellow’.

The ‘Seongdong-type Yellow School Zone’ creates a ‘Yellow Zone’ symbolizing safety by painting all facilities within the school zone, including roads, safety fences, and curbstones, in yellow to enhance the symbolic meaning and visibility of the protection area.

It aims for drivers to recognize the protection zone once again and drive at low speeds to achieve zero (ZERO) traffic accidents on the school pedestrian paths.

The district changed the 300-meter road section in front of the main gate of Gyeongsu Elementary School from the existing dark red to yellow road pavement, and in connection with this, safety fences and pedestrian-vehicle boundary curbstones were also painted yellow.

Furthermore, to ensure children wait safely before crossing the crosswalk and to encourage drivers to drive cautiously, the waiting area walls and floors were created with durable and highly visible yellow sign blocks called ‘Yellow Carpet.’ An optimized environment to prevent traffic accidents on school routes was established by installing a ‘solar-powered speed warning system’ that measures the speed of vehicles in the protection zone in real time and displays it on an electronic board.

Choi, a parent of a student at Gyeongsu Elementary School, said, “The safety of children is always the concern of parents sending their kids to school,” and added, “Recently, seeing the entire school route in front of the school changed to yellow, visible even from afar, makes me feel relieved because passing vehicles will focus without distraction.”

Since the enforcement of the ‘Min-sik Act’ last March, Seongdong-gu has installed speed cameras at 19 school zones in front of schools, replaced safety fences and solar LED signs, maintained Yellow Carpet sign blocks, installed solar-powered speed warning systems, and carried out various facility improvement projects.

Additionally, the district has implemented various policies for children’s traffic safety, such as the walking school bus and traffic safety guardian projects, receiving positive responses from parents.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, “Starting with this pilot operation, we plan to gradually promote the establishment of the ‘Seongdong-type Yellow School Zone,’ a specialized school route safety system unique to Seongdong, targeting all elementary schools in the area,” and added, “We will do our best to create an environment where children can always attend school safely, aiming for zero (ZERO) traffic accidents within school zones.”
