Prime Minister Abi "Military Operation Ended"
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on the 28th (local time) that the military operation in the northern region of Tigray has resulted in the capture of Mekelle, the capital of Tigray. He mentioned the end of the military operation, indicating a victory.
On the 28th (local time), Prime Minister Abiy stated that the military operation in the Tigray area has "ended," saying, "I am pleased to share the news that the military operation in the Tigray region has been completed and stopped."
The Ethiopian military and government also confirmed the capture of Mekelle. General Birhanu Jula, Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian military, declared, "We have completely taken control of Mekelle." He stated that the Ethiopian military is eliminating the remaining hidden forces of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).
On the 4th, clashes broke out when TPLF forces, who opposed the central government, attacked the Ethiopian federal army. After issuing a final ultimatum demanding unconditional surrender within 72 hours, Prime Minister Abiy ordered an advance on Mekelle. He also urged the 500,000 residents of Mekelle to stay indoors and disarm.
Regarding the government's claim of victory, the TPLF has not yet issued a statement.
