[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Amazon, the world's largest e-commerce company, has decided to provide a $500 million (approximately 553.7 billion KRW) bonus to workers struggling with heavy workloads due to the surge in order demand during the year-end holiday season, CNBC reported on the 26th (local time).
According to the report, Dave Clark, Amazon's Senior Vice President of Retail Operations, stated, "Full-time employees hired by the company from December 1 to December 31 will receive a $300 bonus, and part-time workers will receive a $150 bonus."
He said, "I have spent 22 holiday seasons at Amazon, but this is unprecedented," adding, "We send our thanks to our team who play an important role in the community."
Earlier, Amazon also paid $500 million in bonuses to employees in June. This was due to the surge in online shopping demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which heightened workers' dissatisfaction over issues such as safety measures.
It is understood that Amazon decided to pay bonuses to soothe employees as the workload surged during the holiday season from Thanksgiving to Christmas amid worsening working conditions caused by the COVID-19 situation.
Meanwhile, retailers such as Walmart and Target are also reported to have paid bonuses to their employees as the year-end shopping season approaches.
