SK Telecom to Draw 5,000 'Gold Numbers'... Applications Open Starting Today

[Asia Economy Reporter Joeslgina] SK Telecom announced on the 27th that it will conduct the 2nd Gold Number lottery of 2020. The gold numbers released this time consist of 5,000 numbers in 9 different types. Each person can apply for up to 3 desired numbers.

Gold numbers refer to phone numbers whose last 4 digits have patterns such as AAAA, 000A, A000, AA00, 00AA, ABAB, ABCD, or numbers with the same prefix (1234-1234, 1359-1359), or numbers with special meanings (such as 1004, 4989).

During the gold number lottery held in June, the average competition rate was about 25 to 1, and the highest competition rate for a number reached 7,881 to 1.

Customers who want gold numbers can apply from 10 a.m. on the 27th until December 7th at SK Telecom’s official certified agencies or on the T World website (www.tworld.co.kr).

Applications are open not only to new subscribers aged 4 and above, number porting, and device change customers but also to number change customers. However, customers who are currently using gold numbers or have won gold numbers within the past year are excluded from applying.

SK Telecom plans to select winners on December 11th and notify them individually via text message on the same day. Winners can visit an agency to activate their new number between December 14th and December 31st.

Separately, MVNO subscribers can also apply for a separate gold number lottery through their respective MVNO operators.

The lottery will be conducted randomly under the supervision of the Preferred Number Lottery Committee, which consists of government agencies such as the Ministry of Science and ICT and KTOA. The gold number lottery event is held twice a year through each mobile carrier according to government policy.
